Dear People Whom God Loves,
As we continue to look at being human, we look at GLUTTONY. Looking at gluttony, we are reminded again that being human includes being imperfect and broken. We are called to become good humans. That means accepting that we are not supposed to be perfect and that acceptance is the beginning of getting better.
When we allow ourselves to become aware that our eating and drinking are not healthy, we can ask the question: Why do I eat or drink in a way that harms me? Harming ourselves is not reasonable. Why do I do it? What is there besides hunger or thirst? Am I tired? Stressed? Lonely? Feeling rejected? Angry? Guilty? Afraid? Hopeless? What else can you fill in?
When we recognize what is underneath, we can recognize that eating and drinking are not really going to help me. We need something else. AA and DA are often a great help to remedy these underlying wounds.
As an aside, if we have no problem with eating and drinking, we need to be careful not to judge those who have a problem. We might just have faster metabolism. We need this awareness of judgment with all of the matters we have been reflecting on. Indeed, we need to be wary of not beating on ourselves. We must just be aware of what is going on inside of us and our need for change and help.
It can be helpful to choose to eat simply and cultivate new tastes. Fresh water can satisfy us more than a can of pop. We might be surprised by what we can learn.
More next time.
Smile, God Loves You,
Father Clay
